Fluid Movement’s Rebel Teen in the News!

2 Aug

Check us out! We’ve been getting some great press from Baltimore’s media!

The Baltimore Guide:

“If you had used the words “water ballet” and Patterson Park in the same sentence in 1999, people would have laughed—and not necessarily in a good way. A water ballet? Esther Williams style, with bathing caps, beautiful swim suits, and synchronized swimming, in Highlandtown? Well, more improbably successful things have happened in Charm City. Read more…

What Weekly:

“The summer of ’99 saw Fluid Movement’s Baltimore beginnings. Its birth was also a rebirth—it helped rekindle community interest in East Baltimore’s Patterson Park. The collective’s DIY spirit and all-age-appropriate themes reach a crowd beyond that of the typical hip young masses of performance art audiences. But they still made it cool to hang out in Patterson again. Read more…

City Paper:

“WE SAY…OK, the title got us too. Like us, you were probably wondering, What is this? The answer is undoubtedly ridiculous and embarrassing and awesome, all wrapped into 50 minutes by the pool. Read more…
Maryland Transit Authority:
“Is there something in Baltimore’s water supply that makes the unusual, the outrageous and the deliciously charming so commonplace here? Read more…
Even WBAL’s Ava Marie got in on the act…literally!

Learn the Moves: Part One

5 Jun

This past Saturday Fluid Movement had its very first open swim practice at the Druid Hill Park Pool! Fluid Movement swimmers and members of the public came out for a brisk morning dip (9am! On a Saturday!) and to begin learning some of the basic skills of water ballet.

We shared helpful tips – did you know that potassium can help prevent muscle cramps?

Eat bananas or kiwis to increase your potassium intake!

We practiced regular lane swimming, to build up our endurance!

These are the four basic strokes!

And we practiced one of the most important swimming techniques for any water ballet-er: skulling!

We also practiced making some formations:

Like Stars…

… and Circles.

Couldn’t make it this past Saturday? Don’t worry, it’s not too late to come out and pick up a few skills of your own! We’ll be at Druid Hill Park Pool for the next TWO SATURDAYS, from 9am to 11am and we’d LOVE to have you join us!
Oh, and don’t forget: the most important thing to remember in water ballet:
Smile,
Smile,
Smile!

Producing is certainly hard work, but plenty of our duties are lots of fun too! Last week Val and I got a chance to play during a somewhat impromptu trip to AVAM! When are hunt for the perfect mural went awry (we thought it was hidden on the highway to nowhere, but our search proved fruitless) and with the evening’s light threatening to fade away, we needed the perfect funky, spacey, and just generally out-of-this-world backdrop for our publicity photo shoot.

Woah. Is that…a giant space egg? Looks like we came to the right place!

Getting our star ready for her close-ups!

Our extraordinary photographer Thibeaux. (You’ll get to see some of his awesome shots in an upcoming post!)
